Rainier was named for its stunning view of Mount Rainier and is a city in Thurston County. Beginning as a train stop in the 1870s, Rainier was first settled in 1890, and was officially incorporated in 1947. Situated amidst the ‘ten al quelth’ prairies, Lushootseed (Salish Native American language) for "the best yet". The climate of Rainier tends to be relatively mild, the average temperature of the hottest month, August, is 77 °F and Similarly, the average temperature of January, the coldest month, is 32 Fahrenheit. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant; Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, and the Washington coast are all within a day’s drive.
